Edison Girls Win Meet by Taking 400 Relay

It came down to the last event of the meet and Edison’s 400 freestyle relay team won it to give Edison a 94-92 victory over Fountain Valley in Sunset League girls’ swimming Tuesday.

The last time Edison defeated Fountain Valley was in 1985.

Leyna Belcher and Jenna Barro had key swims for the Chargers. Belcher won the 50 and 100 freestyles and Barro took the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke. More importantly, however, was the girls’ swim in the 400 free relay. Belcher, who led off the relay, and Barro, who swam anchor, both had 56.0 splits.

In a South Coast League meet:

No. 10 Capistrano Valley 125, Dana Hills 45--Amber Stachowski won the 500 freestyle (5:25.85) and 100 backstroke (1:05.72) for Capistrano Valley (1-3 in league).

In South Coast League boys’ swimming:

Dana Hills 94, No. 6 Capistrano Valley 76--James Leishman and Scott Baer played pivotal roles in this upset as both won two individual events and were on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Leishman won the 50 (22.15) and 100 freestyles (50.13) and Baer took the 200 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke (1:01.93).

In Century League boys’ tennis:

No. 9 Canyon 17, Orange 1--Travis Kula, Brian Batsel and Andy Tran swept in singles for Canyon (12-2, 5-0), losing only one game combined.

In the Serra League:

No. 10 Santa Margarita 13, Servite 5--Bryan Benson and Richie Hawley swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, including an opening set victory over Servite’s No. 1 team of Michael Blanton and Gerry Chen, for host Santa Margarita (12-4, 7-0).
