Simi Valley Wins a Wild One Over Bishop Amat, 5-4

Winston Cuan struck out on a wild pitch which scored Chris Froehlich from third base in the eighth inning to give Simi Valley High a 5-4 victory over Bishop Amat on Wednesday in the Chino baseball tournament.

Simi Valley (12-7) tied the score, 4-4, in the seventh when Kyle Hendricks hit a solo home run, his first of the season.

Bishop Amat (18-2) is top-ranked in Southern Section Division I.

John Day and Eric Peach each had two hits for Simi Valley.

Steve Westerfield (5-4) of Simi Valley allowed 12 hits, but threw only 91 pitches, striking out two and walking one.

Palmdale 14, Quartz Hill 4--Drew Kennedy had a grand slam, a two-run home run and a single in a Golden League game at Quartz Hill (9-9, 4-6) that was called after six innings because of the 10-run rule.

Steve Denuccio had three-run home run and two-run double, and Chris Niemeyer hit a two-run home run for the Falcons (15-4, 9-1), ranked No. 6 in the region by The Times.

Notre Dame 10, Antioch Deer Valley 0--Mike Barron had two doubles and two runs batted in, and Matt Cunningham hit a solo home run for the Knights in a West Coast Classic game at Santa Clara University.

Tim Meichtry (3-2) and Jesus Soriano combined on a nine-hitter for Notre Dame (12-7).

San Jose Leigh 5, Notre Dame 2--Alec Moss had two hits, including a double, but the Knights lost in the West Coast Classic to Leigh (18-1), the No. 1 team in the San Jose area.

Crespi 7, La Mirada 6--Brian Horwitz hit a run-scoring double in the eighth inning to give the Celts (18-3-1) a victory in the championship game of the St. Paul tournament.

Armando Contreras worked out of a jam with runners on first and second with none out in the bottom of the eighth to earn his first save.

Horwitz (1-0) allowed one hit and struck out five in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

He was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Bishop O’Dowd 6, Westlake 4--Allen Osborne hit a three-run triple, but the top-ranked Warriors lost to the Dragons in the semifinals of the West Coast Classic.

Cory Taillon had three hits for Westlake (19-2) in a 4-2 quarterfinal victory over Leland.

Poly 8, Verdugo Hills 6--Josh Wheeler hit a three-run homer and Miguel Gomez’s two-run single highlighted a four-run fifth for the Parrots (17-5, 9-1) in a Sunset Six League victory at Verdugo Hills.

Daniel Serrano had a solo home run and a double for the Dons (7-5, 5-5), who committed five errors and squandered a 4-0 lead.

Grant 14, North Hollywood 3--Emilio Gomez had three hits and four RBIs in a Sunset Six League victory for the Lancers in a game that was halted after five innings by the 10-run rule.

Felipe Tetelboin doubled, homered and drove in three runs for Grant (13-11, 7-3).

Andy Gutierrez of North Hollywood (11-13, 7-3) had two hits and an RBI.

L.A. Baptist 12, Pasadena Marshall 1--Andrew Petersen pitched a three-hitter and struck out seven for the Knights in an Alpha League victory at L.A. Baptist that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Brian Myers and Brett Emma each homered for L.A. Baptist (11-4-1, 3-1).

Harvard-Westlake 12, Gabrielino 4--Matt Horn had a solo home run, a double and two RBIs for the Wolverines in a nonleague victory at Franklin Field.

Robert Lowenthal hit a solo home run for Harvard-Westlake (11-6), which clinched its second winning season since 1992.

Lancaster Desert Christian 5, Lucerne Valley 4--Nick McLaren’s run-scoring single in the sixth inning gave the Knights a Desert Mountain League victory at Lancaster Desert Christian.

Tyler Downie hit a solo home run for Lancaster Desert Christian (15-1, 4-0).

Village Christian 7, Paraclete 3--Jeremy Gonzales allowed four hits, struck out six in five innings and doubled home a run for the Crusaders (11-4, 4-0) in an Alpha League victory at Paraclete.

Ian Martin added a double and three RBIs for Village Christian (11-4, 4-0).

Paraclete is 4-12, 2-2.

Oak Park 8, Fillmore 7--Matt Koller’s double scored Blake Nelson in the ninth to give the Eagles a Tri-Valley League victory at Oak Park.

Nelson’s triple scored Ryan Duffy with the tying run earlier in the inning.

Mike Wasserman had two doubles and three RBIs for Oak Park (4-12, 2-4).

Highland 16, Lancaster 5--Daniel Champieux hit a grand slam and Jason Kubel added a three-run home run for the Bulldogs in a Golden League game at Lancaster.

Nate O’Malley added two RBIs for the Bulldogs (15-5, 7-3).

Magnolia 9, Antelope Valley 3--Brian Poetschlag stopped the Antelopes with a two-hitter, striking out seven, in the championship game of the Mayfair tournament.

Gus Gomez had five RBIs and Kenny Loza tripled and drove in two runs for Magnolia (9-13).
