Jones’ Fast 400 Sparks Sailors

Trevor Jones posted the fastest time in the county this year in the 400 meters, leading the Newport Harbor boys’ track and field team to a 75-61 victory Wednesday over Aliso Niguel in a Sea View League meet at Aliso Niguel.

Jones set a personal best in the 400, finishing in 48.9 seconds. He also won the 200 in 22.7 and anchored the winning 400 relay team (44.5).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 69, Century 60--Victor Maldonado won the 100 (11.8) and the 220 yards (24.8) for host El Dorado (1-4 in league), and also ran on the winning 440 (47.1) and mile (3:49.6) relays.

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 74, El Toro 62--Dana Hills moved into a three-way tie for first place with El Toro and Mission Viejo. Nick Wedin won the 100 (11.0) and 200 (23.1) and ran a leg for the winning 400 relay team (44.3), and teammate Brad Hutchison won the 800 (2:02.0) and 1,600 (4:30.0) and helped the winning 1,600 relay team (3:32.5).

Mission Viejo 100, San Clemente 36--Scott Bennett won the shot put with a mark of 51 feet 5 inches for host Mission Viejo (4-1), and teammate Jared Stock threw 155-10 1/2 to win the discus.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 94, Huntington Beach 42--Scott Brandos won the 1,600 (4:32.4) and 3,200 (9:59.1), and Eddie Dwelley won the 110 hurdles (15.1) and 300 hurdles (39.6) for visiting Edison (4-1 in league).

In the Golden West League:

Santa Ana 83 1/2, Westminster 56 1/2--Marlen Arguero won three running events--the 100, 200 and 400--and ran a leg for the winning 400 relay team to help Santa Ana to a victory and its first Golden West League title.

In the Sea View League:

Newport Harbor 86, Aliso Niguel 50--April Ross won the high jump (5-2), long jump (16-1 1/2) and triple jump (35-7 1/4) for visiting Newport Harbor (3-1 in league). Amber Steen won the 800 (2:31), 1,600 (5:23), 3,200 (12.38) and anchored the winning 1,600 relay team (4:16) for the Sailors.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 97, Huntington Beach 39--Edison’s Eyrie Jennings won the long jump with a leap of 18-2 1/2, a personal best by eight inches and the county’s third-leading mark this season. Jennings also won the triple jump (37-1) for the Chargers (4-1 in league).
