Griffins Beat Oilers on Van Buskirk’s Putt

Senior Brett Van Buskirk made an eight-foot birdie putt on the last hole to help Los Alamitos upset third-ranked Huntington Beach, 393-394, in a Sunset League boys’ golf match Thursday at SeaCliff.

Van Buskirk was one of four players to shoot six-over-par 78 for the Griffins (4-5 in league).

Andy Anderson shot 73 for Huntington Beach (13-2, 7-2).

In another Sunset League match:

Edison 190, Fountain Valley 203--Kelly Wicks shot a two-under 34 and Josh Dean a 35 for Edison at Mile Square Park, who moved into a third-place tie with Fountain Valley and Los Alamitos. Ryan Robertson shot a 39 for the Barons.

In the Century League:

No. 9 Villa Park 177, Santa Ana Valley 250--Junior Todd Saukkola was the medalist with a three-under 32 at Willowick for Villa Park (14-2, 10-0), which won its seventh consecutive league title.

In the Sea View League:

Woodbridge 182, No. 8 Irvine 191--Andy Browning had three birdies in a two-under 34 and Nate Yates had two birdies in shooting a 35 for Woodbridge (15-3, 6-2) at Rancho San Joaquin.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 189, Trabuco Hills 200--Casey Peet shot a par 36 on Coto de Caza North to medal for the Cougars (11-4, 6-3). Teammate D.J. Reeves finished one stroke behind.

In Freeway League baseball:

Fullerton 4, La Habra 3--Reliever Jimmy Waninger came in to get the final out of the sixth inning with the bases loaded, then pitched the seventh to earn his third save for Fullerton (8-10-1, 4-6).

In Golden West League boys’ tennis:

Saddleback 9, Westminster 9 (Saddleback wins on games, 80-70)--Rafael Nieto swept his sets, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, to end the league season with a 45-0 record.

In Sea View League boys’ track:

Irvine 84, Woodbridge 52--Mario Bassani won the 200 in 22.2 seconds and the 400 in 49.8 for Irvine. Peter Abe won the long jump (20-3 3/4) and triple jump (41-10) for the Vaqueros.

In Sea View League girls’ track:

Woodbridge 105, Irvine 30--Stephanie Marks cleared a personal-best 5-4 to win the high jump for Woodbridge.

At the Penn Relays:

Rebello takes sixth--Marina’s Caroline Rebello took sixth in the girls’ pole vault, clearing 10-10 3/4 at the University of Pennsylvania. Amy Linnen of Mount Sinai, N.Y., won the event (11-10 1/2).

In Pacific Coast League boys’ volleyball:

No. 2 Corona Del Mar 3, Estancia 0--Chris Shepardson had six kills and three aces and Evan Burden had 24 assists for host Corona Del Mar (10-1, 6-0), in a 15-0, 15-4, 15-8, victory.

In South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 3, No. 4 El Toro 1--Paul Johnson had 30 kills and 10 blocks as Capistrano Valley (7-5, 5-3) upset El Toro, 15-3, 15-12, 15-17, 15-11. Jimmy Pelzel had 32 kills for El Toro (10-2, 7-1).
