It’s Week Three of T.J. and They’re Still Not Tired

Giving T.J. Simers a daily forum is the best thing the editors at The Times have done in a long time. The guy can write, and he can think too. Makes the sports section fun to read, for a change.

In regard to T.J. Simers’ bizarre and untrue assertions [July 28] regarding my comments on the Concorde, I was in the JFK British Airways Concorde Lounge on Tuesday waiting to take a flight to London. The tragic crash of the Concorde flight outside Paris caused a cancellation of my flight at JFK. As I left the lounge area, a large crowd of press had gathered, blocking the way and firing questions at myself and others as we made our way through the terminal. How is that courting attention?

When you all eventually lose your jobs due to declining circulation, think back to this.

I can’t help wondering what the morale of your sports department must be, when talented writers and reporters are overlooked in favor of pointless, sarcastic, humorless, mean-spirited, uninformed and graceless guys such as Simers, who should be covering high school football in San Diego.

Dear T.J.,

I never thought I would say this, but I really like your new format. I am one of the million or so people who wrote in objecting to your NFL reporting, but I think you have found your niche.

Good for Lisa Leslie taking the high road when confronted with T.J. Simers’ childish taunt. And he, miffed at not getting a rise out of her, could only say, in the manner of an adolescent bully, that he would not be coming back to the Sparks’ house. My question, who invited him?

Sue Coventon last week wrote, “Let’s hear it from the women sports fans of our town.” Well, I’m an 82-year-old one and I like T.J. Simers’ column. So there!

I know what T.J. Simers means in his Aug. 3 column.

Giovanni Carmazzi is Italian; the DeBartolos are Italian; all Italians have links to the Mafia. I guess it’s only a matter of time until he goes after the international Jewish conspiracy and everyone finds out that I didn’t earn all this money by being a good musician.

I shake my head in bewilderment at the storm of controversy and the volume of mail The Times receives regarding T.J. Simers. It seems people just don’t get it. Simers is a good writer. Those who read his columns and believe he means everything he says are silly.

As an attorney and freelance writer, I am well aware that the most important thing is to be read or listened to. If people are complaining it means they are paying attention. It also means they don’t understand. Simers thrives on stones being thrown at him.
