Huntington Beach Ocean View can take another step toward the Little League World Series when it opens play against Laramie, Wyo., tonight at 8 at the Western Regional in San Bernardino.

Four regional titlists from the United States join four international entries at the 54th Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., Aug. 20-26.

Ocean View (13-1) reached the regional by rebounding out of the losers’ bracket at last week’s Southern California championships in La Mirada to defeat East Yorba Linda Little League twice.

TRACK AND FIELD

Huntington Beach’s Todd Riech came up short of qualifying for the Sydney Olympics in the javelin Monday at a track and field meet in Malmo, Sweden.

Needing a distance of 82 meters or better to make his second consecutive Olympic team, Riech finished third with a throw of 73.30 meters. Riech, who has until Sept. 11 to make the team, will have another opportunity to qualify Friday at the Weltklasse meet in Zurich, Switzerland.

Domanic scored four goals in an earlier 13-5 victory over Navy. The victories lifted SoCal into the semifinals Thursday at El Toro High.

SoCal’s 14-and-under team also advanced to the semifinals with a 5-3 victory over Lincolnshire. The 18-and-under team lost to Villa Park-based ORCA, 3-2, but stayed alive with a 5-4 win over Davis.
