Roberto Duran outpointed P.J. Goossen in a 10-round super-middleweight bout Saturday night at Legends Casino in Toppenish, Wash.

Duran, 49, improved his 33-year professional boxing record to 104-15. Goossen, 30, who was not knocked down in the bout, fell to 19-3.

Tennis

Thomas Enqvist became the first Swede in 10 years to win the Tennis Masters Series-Cincinnati, defeating Tim Henman, 7-6 (5), 6-4, at Mason, Ohio.

Swede Stefan Edberg won the tournament in 1990, when it was known as the ATP Championship.

Henman was the first British player to reach the final in 23 years. Before meeting Enqvist, he defeated Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras for the first time and French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil in the semifinals.

Hockey

Billy Tibbetts, a forward who was out of hockey for more than three years before signing with the Pittsburgh Penguins, served 2 1/2 years in prison and has a lengthy criminal record in Massachusetts.

Tibbetts pleaded guilty March 30, 1994, to raping a 15-year-old girl at a party in Scituate, Mass. He was 17 at the time. He was given a suspended sentence of three to five years and four years of probation.

On April 27, 1994, he was given a suspended sentence of six months, 18 months probation and was fined $625 on charges of assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct and intimidating a witness.

Tibbetts was arraigned again July 12, 1995, in Hingham (Mass.) District Court for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a BB gun. He was found guilty and sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison. He also was found to have violated his parole.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, he was paroled Oct. 29, 1999.

Olympics

Thirty Cuban athletes, coaches and officials were ordered by Cuban authorities to abandon their training camp in Spain, Spanish television reported.

Media reports said the squad was moving its pre-Olympic training camp in the Spanish town of Guadalajara to an unspecified destination in Italy.

The action comes in a few days after Spanish athletics leader Jose Maria Odriozola made public Cuba’s decision to block the participation of Spanish world long-jump champion Niurka Montalvo at the Sydney Games, which open Sept. 15.

Under Olympic rules, the Cuban-born jumper, who gained Spanish nationality last year, needs Cuba’s permission to compete in Sydney because she has not had citizenship of her adopted country for three years.

In another Cuban development, two members of the country’s national junior team who defected at the world junior baseball championships in Edmonton, Canada, were reported to be in Mexico.

Yolexandry Reina, 18, a pitcher, slipped away during a game Monday. William Plaza, 17, a catcher, walked out of a dormitory and into a waiting car Saturday, said Joe Kehoskie, a U.S.-based player agent who helped the players defect.

Miscellany

Laura Wilkinson won the women’s 10-meter platform event in the U.S. national outdoor diving championships at Mission Viejo, defeating 1996 Olympian Becky Ruehl. Justin Dumais, older brother of U.S. Olympic team member Troy Dumais, won the men’s three-meter springboard for his first individual U.S. national title. Jenny Keim and Wilkinson won the synchronized platform event. Troy Dumais and David Pichler won the men’s three-meter synchronized event.

Connell Maynor passed for five touchdowns and ran for two as the Orlando Predators earned their third consecutive trip to the Arena Football League’s ArenaBowl with a 56-44 victory over the Arizona Rattlers at Orlando, Fla.

Chelsea defeated Manchester United, 2-0, before 64,000 in the last Charity Shield to be played at Wembley Stadium before the English stadium is demolished in October.
