Chatsworth Finds Tutor for Its Football Coaches

Coach Bill Coan and his assistant, Ron Martinez, could be back coaching the football team at Chatsworth High by Monday night after the school hired an instructor to conduct a district-mandated coaches’ certification program.

Coan and Martinez will each pay $60 to attend an eight-hour workshop Monday at Chatsworth that is required for them to coach. They were barred from coaching on Thursday for failing to complete the program.

The workshop is open to all coaches.

ATHLETICS

* Senate Bill 338 is headed to Gov. Gray Davis for final approval after the state Senate passed it, 38-0, Friday.

SB 338, sponsored by state Sen. Cathie Wright (R-Simi Valley), originally called for a state law that would require universities and community colleges to provide one-year notification to athletes before dropping a program. The Assembly Committee on Higher Education changed the language of the bill to say “reasonable notification of a termination.”

The bill also directs colleges to make every reasonable effort to place athletes in other programs and to honor athletic scholarships.

GOLF

* Roy Moon of Simi Valley shot three-under-par 69 and is tied for fourth, two shots back, after one round of the Ping Phoenix Junior Championship at Tempe, Ariz.

Hana and Ina Kim of Encino shot 74s and are tied for seventh, three strokes behind, among the girls.

SOCCER

* Aerick Brown, who will be sentenced Oct. 30 after pleading guilty in federal court to making false representations to cull money from investment firms, has resigned as girls’ coach at Westlake High.

Brown faces up to 20 years in prison or a $2 million fine, Assistant U.S. Atty. Lucy Koh said. Brown in 1998 instructed U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray and First Security Van Kasper to sell shares of Dell and America Online stock he didn’t own.

SOFTBALL

* The second annual Brian “Biff” McGahan Memorial Coed Softball Tournament will take place today at El Cariso Park in Sylmar, starting at 8 a.m..

* Jason Perez has been selected girls’ coach at Notre Dame. Perez is a Notre Dame graduate and former coach at Immaculate Heart.
