Crescenta Valley Overtakes Canyon, 81-71

Crescenta Valley High put together a 28-point fourth quarter to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat Canyon, 81-71, during pool play at the Saugus boys’ basketball tournament on Thursday.

Sophomore Jimmy Goffredo scored 26 points, James Jenkins had 23 and Chris Tarne added 12 for Crescenta Valley (2-0), which plays Oxnard at 8:30 tonight in a semifinal game.

Brian Waite scored 25 points and Matt Nelsen added 20 for Canyon (1-1).

Crescenta Valley led, 71-70, with 2:30 left and outscored the Cowboys, 10-1.

Oxnard 63, Bakersfield Stockdale 48--Nicholas Curtis scored 17 points and Erik Webb added 16 to help the Yellowjackets (2-0) in a victory in the Saugus tournament.

Hart 56, Calabasas 54--Jeff French had five three-pointers and finished with 17 points in a nonleague victory for the host Indians.

Crespi 66, Gilroy 62--Andrew Moore’s 10-foot jump shot broke a 62-62 tie with 14 seconds left for the Celts (1-0) in the first round of the San Luis Obispo tournament.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Chatsworth 66, Wilson 53--Ashley Shelton scored 16 of her 26 points in the final quarter for the Chancellors (4-1) in a nonleague game at Wilson (3-2).

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Southern Section tournament--Ojai resident Lori Stern of Cate School in Carpinteria won two matches to advance to today’s semifinals at the Claremont Club.

Stern, seeded fourth and ranked fourth in the girls’ 16 division in Southern California by the U.S. Tennis Assn., defeated Joanna Kao of Sunny Hills in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 7-5, after outlasting Kady Pooler of Dana Hills, 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 6-3, in the round of 16. Stern plays top-seeded Susanna Lingman of Irvine Woodbridge, who has committed to Harvard and is ranked No. 11 in Southern California in the girls’ 18 division by the USTA, at 10:30 a.m. today.

Elizabeth Exon of Woodbridge defeated Monica Wiesener of Calabasas, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 16.

Celia Durkin and Andrea Leewong of Calabasas defeated Arti Iyer and Laura Robinson of Villa Park, 7-5, 6-2, before losing to Gia Nafarrete and Melissa Selmanson of Los Alamitos, 6-3, 6-4, in doubles quarterfinals.

Brittany Holland and Leslie Damion of Corona del Mar eliminated Lauren Gaona and Michelle Alvarez of Camarillo, 6-0, 6-2, in the round of 16.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Canyon 1, Chaminade 1-- Vicky Duffy scored in the 59th minute for Canyon (1-0-1) at Chaminade.

The Eagles (0-0-1), who were outshot, 10-3, struggled without Kim Taylor, who sat out the game in order to play a tournament with her club team this weekend.

Tara Donoghue scored in the 28th minute.
