Portola Valley Woodside Priory d. San Diego Francis Parker, 15-11, 15-10, 8-15, 12-15, 15-13--Cassie Perret had 23 kills and nine blocks as the Panthers (33-3) outlasted Francis Parker (26-9) for the Division V championship.

CROSS COUNTRY

Alicia Craig of Campbell County (Wyo.) High became the fourth runner--and first from outside California--to win two consecutive girls’ titles in the West region cross-country championships at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut on Saturday while handing Anita Siraki of Glendale Hoover her first loss of the season.

Craig, who has committed to Stanford, clocked 17:36 over the 5,000-meter course and Siraki was second in 17:51 in a race in which both runners were saving something for the national championships in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., next Saturday.

“I just wanted to go out and compete,” said Craig, who was running in only her sixth race of the season. “I didn’t want to go out there and kill myself and run the risk of not qualifying for next week.”

Craig and Siraki, who finished third and fourth in the national championships last year, ran together through two miles. But Craig opened up a small lead shortly thereafter and lengthened it to the finish.

Six of the top eight finishers in the girls’ race were from California, including freshman Liza Pasciuto of Murrieta Valley, who finished sixth in 18:12, and senior Natalie Stein of North Hollywood, who placed eighth in 18:21.

Senior Seth Watkins of Flathead (Mont.) won the boys’ race in 15:21.

Watkins, the No. 2 runner for nationally-ranked Flathead for most of the season, was in 11th place after two miles before moving into fourth ascending the final hill on the course and passing Chandler Goodwin of Mt. View (Utah), Flathead teammate David Vidal and Ryan Hall of Big Bear in the last 500 yards of the race.
