The city plans to recognize its winning high school athletic teams with a special parade and celebration Saturday at City Hall.

La Habra High School’s varsity football team, which will compete tonight against South Hills of West Covina for the Division IX Southern Section CIF Title, will be honored along with La Habra High School’s varsity volleyball team and Whittier Christian High School’s girls’ volleyball team.

La Habra’s Highlanders last appeared in a championship football game in 1983, but took their second consecutive Freeway League title this year. The volleyball team was runner-up for the state championship in Division II this year, having also won the Freeway League title for 2000. La Habra’s varsity girls took the California Interscholastic Federation title in volleyball in 1989, 1990 and 1991.

Whittier Christian’s girls’ volleyball team had its best season yet this year by becoming this year’s CIF Southern Section Division IV-A Champions.

The parade will begin at 8:45 a.m. at La Habra High School and continue south to La Habra Boulevard, turning east to City Hall at 201 E. La Habra Blvd. A recognition celebration will be held on the steps outside City Hall following the parade. City employees have arranged for Santa Claus to arrive there at 10 a.m. with a caravan of fire and police cars to greet children and bring gifts.
