Kaelen Jakes of Valencia High committed to Texas on Thursday.

Jakes, an All-American defensive lineman, helped the Vikings reach the Southern Section Division III football final as a junior and the quarterfinals this year.

Jakes, who also took a trip to Washington, canceled a trip this weekend to Miami and also considered USC and UCLA.

“I just felt in my heart that I needed to go to Texas,” he said. “It was the only one I really got excited about playing for. The whole atmosphere there was great.”

Defensive lineman Peter Dubsky of Hart needs one sack to break the school career record of 37 he shares with George Kase.

“That’s big,” he said. “I want to see my name in the record book.”

Dubsky, who has 15 sacks this season, might get his name in there twice.

If Hart beats Mira Costa tonight in the Division III final, he would become the first Hart athlete to letter on three section champions in the same sport.

Receiver Kevin Donoho has been up and down Hart’s depth chart.

Through the summer, the senior was considered a top prospect for a passing program with little returning experience at receiver.

A poor showing during two-a-days sent him to the sidelines.

But he took advantage of a midseason opportunity and has become the Indians’ top deep threat.

“He was the fastest receiver we had and we figured we needed to get him in there and have a guy capable of going deep,” Coach Mike Herrington said of Donoho, who has caught 36 passes for team highs of 700 yards and nine touchdowns.
