Peninsula Overcomes El Toro in Overtime

Palos Verdes Peninsula made five of eight free throws in overtime Monday and defeated El Toro, 52-47, in a pool-play game at the Jim Hill Memorial girls’ basketball tournament at Mission Viejo High.

Carrie Twaddell had 16 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots and Tara Sickmeier had 14 points for the Chargers (4-2), who were outscored, 7-2, in overtime.

In another pool-play game:

Sonora 63, West Torrance 49--Sonora’s Brandi Davis scored a game-high 21 points and Jeanine Baca and Jill DeSousy added nine each for the Raiders (5-2).

In the El Dorado Gary Raya tournament:

No. 3 Rosary 60, Orange Lutheran 47--Jenise Karcher had 15 points, Jenn Farner 14 and Gayle Sonoda 11 for Rosary (4-0).

Leanna Holtzclaw led the Lancers (4-2) with 12 points.

Villa Park 57, Corona 53--Kelly Shimizu had 23 points and Lauren Yadon had 17 points and eight rebounds for Villa Park (2-5).

In the La Quinta Aztec tournament:

University 46, Savanna 21--Kirsten von Tungeln had 13 points and 15 rebounds and Danielle Janda had nine points, 10 rebounds and six steals for University (3-3) in the pool-play game.

In the Moreno Valley Valley View Rotary tournament:

Westminster 62, Moreno Valley Rancho Verde 51--Monica Silivelio had 23 points and Ashley Hebert had 16 points for Westminster (4-2) in a pool-play game.

In a nonleague game:

Anaheim 52, Buena Park 21--The Colonists had 21 steals, led by Elisabeth Coy, who had eight, and Mayra Pelayo, who added six.
