No. 1 Calvary Chapel Loses in Bakersfield

Lorenzo Valdovinos pinned Calvary Chapel’s Mike Crete in the heavyweight match Friday night, putting Bakersfield ahead for good in a 34-27 nonleague wrestling victory at Bakersfield High.

Bakersfield (8-0), ranked second in the state behind the Eagles, opened the match with four victories. Calvary Chapel got its first win on Steve Esparza’s pin in a 130-pound match. The Eagles (7-1) had pins by Willie Parks (171), Conan Williams (189) and Justin Boulais at 215 pounds.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

No. 2 Capistrano Valley 5, No. 7 Irvine 2--Sophomore goalie Meridith McColl had 12 saves and Clare Meadows scored two goals to lead the Cougars at Saddleback College.

Nicole Lorrimer scored with 3:02 remaining in the third quarter to pull Irvine (6-2) even, 2-2. But Laurel Rodin scored for Capistrano Valley (4-0) with 5:21 remaining to put the Cougars ahead for good.

Los Alamitos 12, Manhattan Beach Mira Costa 0--Sophomore Sarah Kilgore recorded the shutout for the Griffins (3-2). Drue Wawrzynski scored four goals and Jessica Levin and Susie Lewis each scored three.

No. 4 Newport Harbor 10, University 8--Jenna Booth scored four goals for host Newport Harbor (3-1). Samantha Klau scored three goals for University (4-3).

Sonora 14, Santa Fe 5--Katie Davis had four goals for visiting Sonora (6-6).
