* Offensive lineman David Gurrola of Fillmore High and fullback Johnny Guo of Oak Park boasted the highest grade-point averages among seniors selected to the Academic All-Ventura County football team.

Gurrola holds a 4.31 GPA, Guo a 4.25.

They were followed by Michael Nava of Santa Paula at 4.22.

They are among 34 seniors nominated for the first team by their coaches. First-team members must have been senior starters who attained a minimum GPA of 3.50.

Juniors selected to the team, including running back Augie Castaneda of Channel Islands with a 4.36 GPA, received honorable mention.

* Jeff Cortez and his staff at Paraclete High have been selected varsity coaching staff of the year by the High Desert Football Coaches’ Assn.

Canyon’s junior varsity and Palmdale’s freshman staffs were also honored.

BASEBALL

* The Jaegar Baseball Academy’s fifth annual Winter arm-strength, conditioning and mental training program is set for 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Dec. 26-29 at Pierce College.

* The Gold Coast Officials Assn. is seeking umpires.

Training begins Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Camarillo High and includes an ASA rules clinic at 8 a.m. Feb. 4 at Los Cerritos Middle School in Thousand Oaks.
