Valencia Makes Run for Rankings, 64-56

It has been a pretty good week for the Valencia High girls’ basketball team.

The Vikings, who were not listed in preseason rankings, started off with a victory Tuesday over Oxnard, ranked No. 7 in the region.

Valencia made it three in a row in pool play at the Burroughs tournament with a 64-56 victory Friday night over Chatsworth at Burroughs High.

The Vikings (8-1) play Agoura tonight in the final.

“We’ve had a tough week and we’ve responded real well,” Coach Jerry Mike of Valencia said. “I’m pretty happy with the progress we’re making.”

Mike was impressed with his team’s scoring balance.

Stephanie Patterson scored 19 points, making eight of 14 shots, and had five steals.

Marissa Meadows had 14 points and seven rebounds, Valerie Pina added 14 points and six assists, and Rashae Minor had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Britney Hamilton had 16 points and five assists for Chatsworth (6-3), Ashley Shelton scored 12 points and Liz Sun added eight points and 12 rebounds.

In other Burroughs tournament games:

Agoura 52, Burroughs 46--Even though Jennifer Lacy fouled out in the final quarter, the Chargers (6-2) held on for their third consecutive victory in pool play.

Lacy, who had 15 points, 10 rebounds and nine steals, was in foul trouble most of the game before fouling out with 3:21 left.

With Lacy out, Burroughs (2-6) narrowed its deficit to 48-46 on a basket by Sara Larquier.

The Chargers sealed the victory when Jana Sobel and Jamie Kogler each made two free throws in the final 31 seconds.

Danica Cunningham had 15 points and Fabi Zavala 10 for the Indians and Larquier had 12 rebounds and six steals.

North Hollywood 46, Hoover 29--Kaipresha Price finished with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists in a victory by the Huskies.

Richelle Sherman added 14 points and five rebounds, and Melissa Escobar had 11 points for North Hollywood (5-4).

Arsineh Eskandari scored 13 points for Hoover (1-5).

Glendale 62, Birmingham 15--Armine Gevorkyan had 19 points and Lucy Cholakian added 10 in a victory for the Dynamiters (3-5).
