Sonora Wins North County Title

Marcelles Robertson scored 17 points as Sonora defeated Valencia, 51-34, Saturday to win the North Orange County Championships at Troy High.

Robert Abreu, the tournament MVP, had 11 points, leading his team in scoring with a total of 83 points in five games for Sonora (9-2). Robertson and Travis Rogers were named to the all-tournament team.

Emmanuel Ortega had 12 points for Valencia (7-4). Ortega had two three-pointers and recorded the 200th of his career.

In other North Orange County tournament games:

Troy 75, Montclair 73 (OT)--Kevin Dalafu scored 21 points and made six free throws in overtime to secure the consolation championship for Troy (7-4).

Los Amigos 77, Westminster 63--Peter Vu had 37 points and 15 rebounds and was 12 for 12 from the free-throw line for Los Amigos (5-6).

Sunny Hills 67, Laguna Hills 53--Tony Gonzalez scored 11 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter and had eight rebounds for Sunny Hills. Clay Carmody added 14 points and seven rebounds in the consolation game for the Lancers (8-2).

In the El Dorado Gary Raya Coed tournament:

No. 7 El Dorado 67, Aliso Niguel 19--Kyle Miller had 16 points, David Patten had 13 and Kevin Cook scored nine for El Dorado (8-1), which won the title.

In the Glendora tournament:

Pacifica 76, Riverside Poly 66--Pacifica’s Kelly Gurnea scored 29 points for the Mariners (4-4), who won the consolation championship. Gurnea made five three-pointers and 14 of 15 free throws.

In the Tri-City Christian tournament:

St. Margaret’s 78, Mission Hills Tri-City Christian 71 (OT)--Tournament MVP Kevin Krause, who finished with 25 points, hit a shot at the end of regulation to tie the score, and made seven of nine free throws in the overtime as St. Margaret’s (6-4) won the title. Teammate Ed Ortega made four three-pointers and scored 17 points.

In the Torrey Pines boys’ soccer invitational:

Capistrano Valley advances--After beating Chula Vista Bonita Vista, 2-1, in pool play, the Cougars (10-1-2) defeated Fallbrook, 2-0, to advance to Monday’s semifinals.

In nonleague games:

Mater Dei 2, Northwood 1--Martin Stringer recorded his 200th victory in 12 years of coaching at Mater Dei. Matt Fennell had a goal and an assist and Nick Miller scored a goal for the Monarchs.

In the Norwalk Glenn girls’ soccer tournament:

No. 10 Sunny Hills 4, Kennedy 1--Simi Phull scored three goals and Christina Kim had two assists for the Lancers (7-0), who play Chino Don Lugo for the championship Monday at 3 p.m.

In the South Torrance tournament:

Edison 5, San Marcos 2--Junior forward Brooke Thulin scored two goals and Stacia Hoover had two assists for the Chargers (7-1-2) in the ninth-place game.

In nonleague games:

Mater Dei 2, Lakewood Mayfair 0--Jessica Gatica and Katy Dowling each scored for visiting Mater Dei (4-3-1).

In the San Clemente girls’ water polo tournament:

Sunny Hills 11, Mission Viejo 6--Shelma Jun and Roxanna McEwen scored three goals each as Sunny Hills (7-3) led all the way. Emily Simenson made 10 saves in the consolation game.

In the Big Bear King of the Mountain wrestling tournament:

San Clemente wins--David Randle defeated Downey Calvary Chapel’s John Taylor, 7-3, in the 160-pound division to take third place and help San Clemente edge out El Capitan, 224-223, for the team title.

It was the third tournament championship this season for San Clemente, which got first-place finishes from Trevor Brady in the 145-pound division and Vincent Giordano in the 171-pound class. The Tritons also had four runners-up and three third-place finishers in the 18-team tournament. San Clemente (17-3) is ranked eighth in the county.

Esperanza finished fourth with 139 points, San Clemente’s B team was 12th with 54, and Westminster finished 15th with 51.
