At least 13 Minnesota players misused a university telephone access code and will be suspended until they repay about $420 in charges, the school announced Wednesday.

It was another black eye for the university, still reeling from a basketball scandal that resulted in NCAA probation and the suspension of leading tackler Delvin Jones for the Dec. 28 Micronpc.com bowl. Jones’ suspension is unrelated to the phone investigation.

Coach Glen Mason expected all of the player to repay the money before the team leaves Friday for Miami, site of the bowl game.

Florida State’s Marvin “Snoop” Minnis was declared academically ineligible, knocking the All-America receiver out of the Orange Bowl. Minnis was Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke’s No. 1 receiver, catching 63 passes for 1,340 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was nine hours from graduation but did not satisfy the semester’s requirements, Athletic Director Dave Hart said. . . . Ohio State receiver Reggie Germany, the team’s second-leading receiver, will not play in the Outback Bowl because of academic problems. The Columbus Dispatch reported that Germany, a senior, missed classes. . . . Florida offensive lineman Zac Zedalis will be back, but defensive line coach Rod Broadway will not. The NCAA granted Zedalis a sixth year of eligibility, allowing him to play in 2001 after missing the last two seasons because of injuries. Broadway will leave the Gators after the Sugar Bowl to coach the same position at his alma mater, North Carolina.
