Calabasas Hands Agoura First Loss

Guard Adam Malatesta of Calabasas High said his team worked too hard to let the game slip away.

So when he saw an opening along the baseline with time running out, he didn’t waste the opportunity.

Malatesta made a short jumper as time expired in overtime and the Coyotes stunned previously undefeated Agoura, 61-60, in a quarterfinal game Thursday at the Chaminade boys’ basketball tournament.

“They’re our [district] rivals and they were undefeated and we haven’t played up to our potential,” Malatesta said. “But we practice those situations and we were not going to lose that game. We just worked too hard.”

Calabasas (4-8), which led, 39-26, midway through the third quarter, appeared in good position when it scored the first five points in overtime.

The Chargers (9-1), ranked No. 6 in the region by The Times, responded with six consecutive points in the next 1:30, taking a 60-59 lead on a free throw by Justin Campbell with 22.5 seconds remaining.

By the time Malatesta hit his jumper and the Coyotes piled on top of each other on the court, Coach Russell White of Calabasas said he was an emotional wreck.

“It was just a very emotional game,” he said. “My hands hurt from clapping so much.”

Sky Holm had 17 points and six rebounds, and reserve Justin Fenchel scored 12 points in Calabasas’ most significant victory in White’s two seasons as coach.

Adam Allegro had 20 points and six rebounds, and Jamie Patton scored 13 points for Agoura.
