Alemany Loses Scott to Eisenhower

Tailback De’Andre Scott, The Times’ Valley offensive co-player of the year, has checked out of Alemany High and said Monday he will begin classes today at Eisenhower in Rialto.

Scott, who rushed for 1,747 yards and scored 33 touchdowns last season as a junior, is living with his uncle.

* Ed Croson, who has guided Chaminade High to consecutive playoff berths and a league championship in his two seasons as football coach, is a top candidate for the vacant Alemany coaching position.

Also in the running is former Alemany coach Chris Kincaid, who has coached in Texas.

Croson told his Chaminade players Friday that he is exploring other coaching opportunities and is not expected to return in the fall.

* Tim Volk, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound sophomore defensive tackle at Westlake, has transferred to Notre Dame.

* Hart, a two-time defending Southern Section champion, is seeking opponents for games one and three of the 2000 season.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Lawrence Nelson, the 1985 state champion in the boys’ long jump for Simi Valley High, has been hired as the boys’ coach at his alma mater.

Nelson, 33, was a first-year assistant to Chuck Gustafson at the start of the school year, but Gustafson stepped down shortly thereafter and recommended that Nelson replace him.

BASEBALL

* El Camino Real is holding its alumni game Feb. 26. There also will be an alumni golf tournament on Feb. 27.

* The San Fernando Valley Baseball Officials Assn. is sponsoring a golf tournament Feb. 21 at Vista Valencia Golf Course. Cost is $75.

MOTOR SPORTS

* Billy Payne of Chatsworth has moved into ninth place in the American Motorcyclist Assn. supercross series 125cc points standings following his fourth-place finish Saturday at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix.

Payne placed seventh in the Jan. 22 event at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium.

* Sports publicists Irv Kaze and Bob Steiner instruct a UCLA extension course one-day seminar and optional six-session follow-up on sports public relations.

The one-session seminar takes place Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at UCLA, 1220B Knudsen Hall. Cost is $95.
