Wilson Helps Marina Beat No. 2 Villa Park
Erin Wilson scored two goals to help Marina, ranked sixth in Orange County, defeat second-ranked Villa Park, 5-4, in the second round of the Southern California Championships girls’ water polo tournament Thursday at Corona del Mar High.
Marina (13-7) advanced to play Long Beach Wilson in tonight’s quarterfinals. Danee French scored two goals for Villa Park (15-5).
In other second-round games:
No. 3 Esperanza 6, Los Alamitos 3--Dianna Catron scored two goals for Esperanza (19-3), which advanced to play top-ranked Irvine (16-2).
Unranked Los Alamitos advanced to the second round with a 7-5 victory over Rosary, ranked 10th in Orange County. Drue Wawrzynski scored three goals for the Griffins (11-10).
Newport Harbor 8, Lompoc Cabrillo 3--Katherine Gregg scored three goals for Newport Harbor (19-4), which advanced to play Santa Barbara.
No. 9 Santa Margarita 8, No. 8 Capistrano Valley 5--Kristina Kunkle scored three goals for Santa Margarita (14-4), which advanced to play Foothill, ranked fourth in the county.
In the Freeway League:
Sonora 5, Troy 4--Laura McNabb, Samantha Arnold and goalie Courtney Robertson, who scored on a length-of-the-pool shot, had fourth-quarter goals for host Sonora (15-4, 7-1). Kristen Ruddock and Serenity Inman scored two goals each for Troy (15-2, 7-1).
