A 39-year-old man sitting on the railroad tracks near the Ventura Amtrak depot was struck by a passenger train and critically injured Monday, police said.

The northbound train was traveling about 30 mph as it approached the Seaside Park depot about 1 p.m., police said. The engineer sounded the horn and applied the brakes, but Jeffrey Jones did not move off the tracks, police said.

Jones, who police believe is a transient, was being treated in the intensive care unit at Ventura County Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.

Ventura Police Sgt. David Wilson said it is unclear why Jones didn’t move off the tracks but that officers interviewed witnesses who said he may have been drinking prior to the incident.
