Cleveland Slams Against Tough Wall

John Wall recorded his seventh consecutive shutout and Francisco Flores scored to help Birmingham High defeat Cleveland, 1-0, in a West Valley League boys’ soccer game Tuesday at Cleveland.

The Patriots (16-4-2, 8-0-1 in league play) clinched their seventh league title in 10 seasons.

In other boys’ soccer games:

Channel Islands 2, Rio Mesa 2--Marcos Aguilar scored on a penalty kick with no time left to salvage a tie for Channel Islands (7-2-6, 4-2-6) in a Pacific View League game at Rio Mesa.

John Johnen of Rio Mesa scored with six minutes to play to break a 1-1 tie.

Rio Mesa (12-8-3, 7-1-3) can clinch the league title with a tie or a victory on Friday.

Montclair Prep 2, Campbell Hall 0--Daniel Mizraki and Marcelo Santos scored in a Delphic League game and the host Mounties (10-5-3, 3-3-1) clinched their first playoff spot since 1994.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Camarillo 4, Hueneme 0--Sabrina Stracke scored twice in the first half and the Scorpions (14-5-1, 10-2-0) cruised in a Pacific View League game at Hueneme.

Cleveland 3, Birmingham 0--Angela Veliz had a hat trick in a West Valley League game at Birmingham.

Cleveland is 8-5-3, 3-4-2.

Chatsworth 11, Taft 1--Shannon DeVos scored twice and had five assists in a West Valley League game at Taft.

The Chancellors are 12-3-1, 8-0-1.

Calabasas 2, Crossroads 0--Katie Auerbach and Ashley Dechter scored goals in a nonleague game at Calabasas (10-8-1).

Quartz Hill 2, Highland 1--Kellie Cox’s goal from 25 yards broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Rebels (16-1-2, 7-0-1) in a Golden League game at Highland.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Burroughs 27, Alhambra 1--Anna Bolotnikova scored five goals and Julie Olson and Sarah Vejar each had four in an Almont League game at Alhambra.
