Irvine Needs Overtime To Defeat Laguna Hills, 75-67

Kristin Thawley and Jody Carlson combined for 12 of Irvine’s 13 points in overtime as the Vaqueros defeated Laguna Hills, 75-67, in a Sea View League girls’ basketball game Tuesday at Irvine.

Megan Aaker, who scored 28 points for Laguna Hills (13-13, 4-4 in league), tied the score with a three-pointer with about a minute remaining. Carlson missed a free throw with 12 seconds remaining in regulation and the game went into overtime.

Thawley scored 31 points and Carlson had 19 points and five steals for the first-place Vaqueros (22-3, 7-0).

In another Sea View League game:

Woodbridge 50, Aliso Niguel 42--Natalie Quinn had 19 points for visiting Woodbridge (16-9, 6-1). Julia Pederson had 16 points and six rebounds for Aliso Niguel (13-12, 1-6).

In the Century League:

El Modena 50, Santa Ana Valley 46--Lindsey Galasso scored 20 points for host El Modena (12-11, 4-5).

Foothill 55, Orange 30--Chavaughn Brown scored 17 points in one half of playing time for Foothill (18-7, 9-0), which clinched its second consecutive league title.

Villa Park 48, Canyon 44--Liesl Bielefeld’s three-pointer with 25 seconds remaining gave Villa Park (15-10, 7-2) its final margin of victory. Bielefeld had eight assists, and Lauren Yadon had 23 points and five blocked shots for the Spartans.

In the Empire League:

Century 49, Kennedy 29--Elizabeth Mendoza had 16 points, six rebounds and six assists for visiting Century (21-4, 9-0).

El Dorado 60, Loara 39--Melissa Jacob, who missed the previous game with an ankle injury, had 16 of her 20 points in the first half for El Dorado (15-10, 6-3).

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 54, La Habra 37--Mindy Clark had 13 points and seven rebounds for visiting Sonora (16-9, 7-2).

No. 1 Troy 83, Sunny Hills 17--Veronica Johns-Richardson had 22 points and seven assists, Katie Hardeman scored 21 points for visiting Troy (22-3, 9-0), which clinched its eighth consecutive league title.

In the Garden Grove League:

Bolsa Grande 53, Garden Grove 51--Debby Baeder scored 15 points for host Bolsa Grande (6-17, 4-7) which upset third-place Garden Grove (11-14, 7-4).

In the Olympic League:

Cerritos Valley Christian 49, Calvary Chapel 42--Susie Boogard scored 20 points for visiting Cerritos Valley Christian (19-6, 8-1).

Ashley Nelson and Richeal Werdel scored nine points each for Calvary Chapel (15-7, 7-2).

In the Orange League:

No. 2 Brea Olinda 68, Magnolia 44--Chelsea Trotter had 26 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Brea Olinda (20-5, 9-0), which led, 24-17, at the half.

Valencia 58, Savanna 43--Monika Jackley scored 29 points for Valencia (21-3, 7-3).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 60, Laguna Beach 23--Autumn Smith had 12 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and five blocked shots for visiting Costa Mesa (16-9, 5-2).

In the Serra League:

No. 9 Mater Dei 64, Lakewood St. Joseph 35--Seniors Kristian Kirkpatrick scored 15 points and Lindsay Pavlik added 14 for Mater Dei (20-6, 5-1), which clinched the league title.

No. 10 Rosary 43, No. 8 Santa Margarita 40--

Jenise Karcher made two free throws with four seconds left to clinch the game for the Royals (18-9, 3-3) and give Coach Rich Yoon his 100th career victory.

Santa Margarita is 16-9, 3-2.

In the South Coast League:

No. 3 El Toro 74, Mission Viejo 37--Giuliana Mendiola had 41 points, including six three-pointers, 13 rebounds, eight assists and six steals for El Toro (19-6, 8-1).

No. 4 San Clemente 67, Trabuco Hills 28--Kristin Jenkins scored 15 points for San Clemente (22-3, 8-1).

In the Sunset League:

Edison 66, Fountain Valley 27--Rachael Ziemann had 19 points and seven assists and Michelle Zylstra had 10 points, 22 rebounds and six blocked shots for Edison (17-8, 8-1), which clinched a tie for the league title.

Los Alamitos 56, Huntington Beach 53--Stephanie Duda’s free throw with just under a minute remaining gave Los Alamitos the lead for good, giving the Griffins their first league victory in 2 1/2 years. Duda had 12 points, 14 rebounds and five steals.
