Oxnard, Moorpark in WSC Title Hunt

Oxnard and Moorpark colleges moved a step closer Wednesday night to claiming shares of the Western State Conference Northern Division men’s basketball title.

Oxnard defeated Hancock, 95-87, in Santa Maria and Moorpark routed Cuesta, 83-64, in San Luis Obispo.

Oxnard (20-8, 7-2 in division) travels to Santa Barbara, and Moorpark (22-7, 7-2) hosts Hancock on Saturday night in regular-season finales.

Sophomore Omar McCarter made nine of 10 free throws and scored a season-high 31 points for Oxnard. Tellys Knight had 18 points and 15 rebounds, and Chris Massie added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Condors.

In Moorpark’s victory, Danny Galvanoni had 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, while Kenny Plummer had 24 points and 15 rebounds, and Alan Case added 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Glendale 101, West L.A. 73--Mark Caguioa took advantage of a rare chance to start for host Glendale, scoring 30 points in a WSC Northern Division game.

Caguioa, who is usually the sixth man, made 11 of 12 shots, including five of five three-point baskets.

Glendale (22-7, 8-3) started all sophomores in its final regular-season home game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Pepperdine 70, Loyola Marymount 68--Rasheeda Clark had 22 points, four rebounds and three assists for host Pepperdine (16-8, 9-2) in a West Coast Conference game.

Taryn Reynolds scored 20 points for Loyola Marymount (13-11, 6-5).

Canyons 78, Bakersfield 70--Kameelah Purdom scored 22 points, Tasha Allen had 20 and the Cougars (23-6, 11-0) clinched the WSC Southern Division title at Bakersfield (22-10, 9-3).

Santa Monica 84, Valley 70--Chante Gifford scored 22 points, including three three-point baskets, for host Valley in a battle for third place in the WSC Southern Division.

Michelle Tompkins scored 19 points and Carrie Miller had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Valley (17-13, 5-6), which plays West L.A. on Saturday.

Moorpark 86, Pierce 49--LaShanda Smiley scored 22 points for Moorpark (8-19, 7-4) in a WSC Northern Division game at Pierce (2-28, 0-12).

Cathleen Reuter scored 18 points for Pierce, which was outscored in the second half, 55-18.
