Rodger Medal of Pasadena and Felipe Compa of Oxnard fight tonight for the California junior-lightweight boxing title at the Valencia Hyatt grand ballroom before a sold-out crowd of 600.

The 10-round championship match headlines a five-bout card. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the first bell is set for 7:15.

Medal is 11-2 with three knockouts and Compa is 7-1-1.

“We sold out a week ago and we have 75 people on a waiting list,” said Ron Williams, president of RW Promotions. “We’re still waiting to see if we’re going to sign a contract for more events, but in terms of revenue to the community and the Hyatt, this will be a tremendous success.”

Compa is stepping in for La Colonia Boxing Club teammate Israel Corea (9-2), who became ill during training.

“When you’re training to go 10, 12 rounds, you can’t get sick and expect to compete,” said Ruben Juarez, one of the La Colonia coaches. “We knew Israel could take [Medal], and when he got the flu, we said, ‘Hey, Felipe can take him, too.’ ”

Other bouts will include Alex Virgen (3-2-1) of Palmdale against Joe Johnson (2-3) of Lancaster in a four-round light-heavyweight match.

The card includes Rolando Reyes of Oxnard and Joe Shadarwich of Costa Mesa, both 3-0, in a four-round lightweight bout.
