SOUTHLAND
Eastern Washington 70, CS Northridge 66--Brian Heinle missed a score-tying shotattempt in the final three seconds before 1,319 at the Matadome and Northridge (15-9, 7-6) lost at home for the first time in 10 games this season.
The loss eliminated the Matadors from the race for first in the Big Sky Conference and dropped them into fifth place.
The Matadors probably will qualify among six teams for the Big Sky tournament--which probably will take place at Eastern Washington. The Eagles (14-9, 11-2) maintained a 1 1/2-game lead over second-place Montana while improving their conference road record to 5-2, best in the Big Sky.
“Tonight, they showed why they’re the No. 1 team,” guard Carl Holmes of Northridge said. “Winning big games on the road against good teams.”
The victory was Eastern Washington’s sixth consecutive regular-season triumph over the Matadors. Three of the victories were by a combined five points.
