Vanguard Women Win to Extend Streak

Vanguard got strong playmaking and free-throw shooting from Becki Huddle and held on to extend its home winning streak to 45 games with a 71-65 victory over Fresno Pacific Saturday in a Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball game.

Huddle made 15 of 16 free throws, scored 19 points and had nine assists for Vanguard (14-2, 3-0), ranked 10th in NAIA Division I. Kelly Boeke added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions.

In another GSAC game:

Concordia 86, Cal Baptist 69--Priscilla Bendik had 20 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the visiting Eagles.

Laura Hanson had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Jaime Gast scored 16 points for Concordia.

In GSAC men’s basketball:

Concordia 91, Cal Baptist 80--Josh Giles made 16 of 17 free throws and scored 29 points and center Harold Hoffman scored 23 points for visiting Concordia.

Vanguard 60, Fresno Pacific 48--Brandon Cablay scored 16 points and Dennis Keane had 14 points and 12 rebounds for Vanguard (9-6, 1-2), which took a 36-25 halftime lead after shooting 59% from the floor.

In men’s swimming at the UC Irvine Invitational:

Anteater men place first in distance portion--UC Irvine’s Attila Szilagyi took first in the 1,000 freestyle in 10:06.30, 20.57 seconds ahead of teammate Gus Fowler.

In the UC Irvine men’s volleyball tournament:

UCLA 3, UC Irvine 0--Steve Cavella had 17 kills for UC Irvine (1-2), which lost, 15-6, 15-6, 15-7.

Ty Loomis had 20 kills and Jarrett Jensen 37 assists for the Anteaters in an earlier 15-4, 16-14, 15-13 loss to Long Beach State.
