Ice Dogs Win in Shootout

Jan Nemecek scored the decisive shootout goal and Steve Vezina stopped five of six shots in the tiebreaker as the Long Beach Ice Dogs beat the Houston Aeros, 3-2, Sunday.

Nemecek’s goal came after the first shootout round was tied, 1-1, with Pavel Rosa scoring for Long Beach and Terry Marchant scoring for Houston.

The Aeros led, 2-0, on first-period goals by Lane Lambert and Paul Dyck. After a scoreless second, Scott Thomas scored his 13th goal and Rob Pearson tied it with 8:54 remaining.

The Ice Dogs have won two in a row on the road after losing 10 straight.

It was the second time in three days that the Ice Dogs have beaten the defending Turner Cup champions.

Pearson’s game-tying goal came off a feed from Jason Blake.

Vezina entered the game for the shootout after Mike O’Neill played a strong game in regulation for the Ice Dogs, stopping 19 of 21 Aero shots.
