El Dorado Pins Loss on No. 5 Loara

El Dorado, ranked 10th in Orange County, clinched its 38-30 victory over fifth-ranked Loara with Joe Faraone’s pin in the heavyweight match of an Empire League dual wrestling meet Thursday at El Dorado High.

Faraone pinned Loara’s Jose Hernandez in 3 minutes 59 seconds, helping the host Golden Hawks improve to 3-0 in league.

At 171 pounds, El Dorado’s Dan Pierro trailed, 3-1, but took down Fernando Magano with 15 seconds remaining in the final period to send the match into overtime. Pierro won the match by pinning Magano at 6:45.

Loara is 2-1 in league.

In another Empire League meet:

Katella 57, Cypress 17--Tommy Stokes (189 pounds) and Andy Garcia (125) won by fall and Katella (3-3, 1-1) was helped by six forfeits.

In the Garden Grove League:

Rancho Alamitos 52, Garden Grove 27--Raul Ramirez scored a pin at 140 pounds to improve to 24-2. Jason Figueroa also won by pin at 160 pounds for the Vaqueros (15-7, 2-0). Garden Grove is 6-6, 1-2.

Santiago 39, Los Amigos 38--Santiago trailed by five points going into the last match, but Joe Bonea won by default over Mike Meyers to give the Cavaliers (3-0 in league) the six points they needed to win.

Los Amigos gave up 18 points on injury forfeits before the meet.

In the Golden West League:

No. 4 Santa Ana 70, Tustin 6--Pins by heavyweight Ed Arvizo, Richard Brito at 160 pounds and Jair Ramirez at 140 led host Santa Ana (6-1, 2-0).

Saddleback 72, Westminster 6--Saddleback recorded seven pins and won four matches by forfeit. Stephen Blunk, the Roadrunners’ team captain, won with a pin in 3:18 at 135 pounds. Saddleback improved to 8-7, 2-0.

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 10 Laguna Hills 72, Newport Harbor 12--Nathan Urfano won his 140-pound match with a pin in 3:28 for host Laguna Hills (20-1, 2-0).

In the Serra League:

La Puente Bishop Amat 69, Santa Margarita 3--Brian Sabin scored the lone victory for Santa Margarita (4-4, 0-2), beating Ryan McMillin in the third period, 9-3.

In the South Coast League:

No. 8 San Clemente 55, El Toro 19--San Clemente scored eight pins. Charles Sandness (112), Ryan Friedman (119), Chuck Presley (130), Joe Brady (152), Vincent Giordano (160), Josh Stewart (171), Josh Pridham (215) and heavyweight Brett Girot all won by fall. San Clemente is 13-2, 2-1.

Mission Viejo 43, Capistrano Valley 28--Key wins by Noah Koendarfer (160), Randy Plunkett (171) and heavyweight Charles Moore sealed the victory for the Diablos. Koendarfer, who won at 160 pounds at the Estancia tournament last weekend, won by fall, as did Moore, who won in 51 seconds.

Mission Viejo is 15-3, 2-1. Capistrano Valley drops to 1-2 in league.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 33, Edison 23--A pin at 103 pounds by Alex Cariaga in 1:28 started a four-match winning streak that helped Esperanza (17-6, 2-0) win the meet.

In a nonleague meet:

Villa Park 38, Albuquerque Rio Rancho 23--Aron Wisniewski won his match at 125 pounds, 10-3, to lead the Spartans (12-1), who won nine of the 14 matches. Andrew Fennell won by a pin in 2 minutes 47 seconds at 140 pounds and Nick Diaz also won by a pin in 3:45 at 145 pounds.

At 119 pounds, Brian Pitts defeated Villa Park’s Doug Yadon, the top-ranked wrestler in Orange County in that weight class, 9-7, for Rio Rancho, the No. 2-ranked team in New Mexico.

Steve Glassey, formerly the coach at Brethren Christian, is the coach for Rio Rancho, which is in Orange County for this weekend’s Five Counties meet at Fountain Valley High.
