The Buena boys (7-12, 2-0) are tied for the Channel League lead, but 19th-year Coach Glen Hannah knows a game at Santa Barbara (16-2, 2-0) tonight and one against cross-town rival Ventura (13-6, 2-1) at Ventura College on Friday will give him a better idea of how well the Bulldogs are playing.

“Those are two big games,” he said. “We can’t have any lulls when we play those teams. We’ll be in trouble if we do.”

Zach Smith of Oak Park (12-6, 2-0) totaled 41 points, 27 rebounds and 12 blocked shots in Tri-Valley League victories over Carpinteria and Fillmore last week.

Smith made all 11 shots he took in a 60-28 victory over Carpinteria and he was eight for 11 in a 78-33 victory over Fillmore.

The Camarillo boys (9-10, 1-2) played Oxnard tough before losing, 64-56, last Wednesday and beat Channel Islands, 59-56, on Friday.

But Coach Mike Prewitt wants further proof the Scorpions have put their inconsistent play of earlier this season behind them.

“A win [against Ventura tonight] might be an indication that we’ve turned the corner,” Prewitt said. “But last week doesn’t mean much if we don’t continue to play well.”

Hueneme (11-6, 2-0), which will host Oxnard 15-4, 3-0) in a Pacific View League boys’ showdown tonight, equaled its victory total of last season with a 55-48 victory over San Marcos on Friday.

The Vikings can take sole possession of first place and equal their highest victory total since they were 16-9 in 1992-93.
