The Grant High girls’ basketball team set school records for points in a game, steals, assists and field goals during the Lancers’ 121-11 rout of Hollywood on Wednesday.

The Lancers (12-6, 3-0) tied a school record for fewest points allowed and just missed the mark for best field-goal percentage.

Their final score eclipsed the record set in a 110-22 victory over Canoga Park in 1995-96. The points allowed equaled the number given up in a 74-11 victory over Van Nuys in 97-98.

Grant Coach Steve Brumwell didn’t take much pleasure the achievements, though.

“In the second half, we stopped in the back court and let them run down the court,” Brumwell said. “But they still were having trouble getting down the court, no matter what we did. Even when we stopped and waited.”

Brumwell, who has only eight players on his roster, substituted as liberally. Starting guards Kathleen Mallon and Leslie Mui were held out the entire fourth quarter and forward Alexis Weatherspoon sat out six minutes of the quarter.

“It basically turned into a scrimmage in the second half,” he said. “We could have scored 150 points, probably.”

Mallon, a senior, has been bothered recently by a sore right knee. For the most part she has played through the pain.

Mallon, the Lancers’ top shooter from three-point range where she has made 27 of 61 shots (44.3%), did not practice last week. She sat out the Lancers’ league opener and played sparingly against Canoga Park before returning for a start against Hollywood.

The rest apparently helped. Mallon had 10 points, nine on three-pointers, and made seven steals against the Sheiks.

Cleveland High will be without starting point guard Mishawn Simms for at least two weeks.

Simms, a senior, sprained her right ankle last week. Coach KimBerly Kelly said, “It’s bad. It’s one of the worst ones I’ve ever seen.”

Canoga Park’s girls’ basketball team has more victories than the last five seasons combined.

Canoga Park (8-8, 1-2) posted a 7-73 record from 1994-95 through last season, including 0-16 seasons in 1996-97 and ‘97-98.

But after nearly a decade of struggle, improvement has finally begun in the fourth season under Coach Antony Villalobos.

He guided the Hunters to a 4-12 mark last season. They were 1-15 under Villalobos in 1995-96 and 2-14 under another coach in 1994-95.

Tiffany Saunders, a 5-11 junior center, is averaging 15.1 points and 11.3 rebounds. Senior forward Elizabeth Hernandez has averaged 10.3 points and 6.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists, and sophomore Shermia Jackson is at 7.9 points a game.

“We’re coming along,” Villalobos said.
