Vanguard’s Winning Streak Ends

Unranked Biola ended Vanguard’s 46-game home winning streak with a 91-76 upset of the 10-ranked Lions in a Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday.

Biola’s Heather Doud had 31 points and nine rebounds and former Troy High standouts Kristin Arnold (19 points) and Heidi Hardeman (18 points including four three-pointers) also played well for the Eagles.

Vanguard shot 35% from the field in the first half, fell behind at halftime, 44-31, and never recovered. Biola (6-12, 4-3 in conference) shot 55% from the field.

Kelly Boeke scored 19 points and Becki Huddle had 17 points and eight assists for Vanguard (16-4, 5-2), which pulled to within seven points with seven minutes remaining but drew no closer.

In another conference game:

Azusa Pacific 85, Concordia 78 (OT)--Concordia, ranked 23rd in the nation, was outscored 17-10 in the overtime period and Jennifer Barbone scored 22 points for Azusa Pacific (14-4, 5-2).

Jaime Gast had 33 points, including four three-pointers, and 13 rebounds for the Eagles (15-4, 5-2), and Priscilla Bendik had 10 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists.

In a nonconference game:

Chapman 74, UC Santa Cruz 43--April Abeyta scored 20 points, making seven of 10 from the field and six of six from the free-throw line for host Chapman (11-5).

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Azusa Pacific 80, Concordia 75--Josh Giles made four three-pointers and 12 of 13 free throws and finished with 30 points for host Concordia (11-7, 3-4). Kevin Daley scored 31 points for Azusa Pacific (16-3, 6-1), ranked seventh in the nation.

Biola 94, Vanguard 73--No. 4 Biola (16-2, 7-0) outscored Vanguard in the first half, 46-24, and cruised. Shawn Corkery scored 13 points for the Lions (9-10, 1-6).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, UC Riverside 0--Junior Oliver Schweizer, a transfer from Pepperdine, won his No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-3, and teamed with Chris Chung to win in doubles, 8-2, for host Irvine (2-0), which also defeated U.S. International, 7-0.

In Big West Conference women’s tennis:

Pacific 7, Cal State Fullerton 2--Amy Medlin and Eleanor Luzano won at No. 1 doubles and Laurel McLatcher and Trisha Marino won at No. 3 doubles for Fullerton (1-1, 0-1).
