Curtis’ 18 Points, 21 Assists Lead Vanguard to Conference Win
Vanguard’s Ardis Curtis had 18 points and 21 assists, both career highs, to help the host Lions defeat Christian Heritage, 100-86, in a Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday at Vanguard.
Vanguard (10-10, 2-6 in conference), which played without starting freshman guard Shawn Corkery (ankle injury), shot 54% from the field.
Dennis Keane scored 24 points and Brandon Cablay had 22 points for the Lions. Keane made 10 of 14 from the field, including four three-pointers. Freshman guard Daniel Holechek added 12 points.
Brad Micholson made seven of 22 three-pointers and finished with 26 points and Josh Layton made 11 of 14 from the field and had 26 points for Christian Heritage (11-10, 5-3).
In other conference games:
Point Loma Nazarene 77, Hope International 57--Travis Lindstrom scored 25 points for host Point Loma (18-3, 6-2), ranked 21st in the nation. Seth Houck scored 18 points for Hope International (7-14, 0-8).
Westmont 76, Concordia 60--Josh Giles scored 15 points and Harry Hoffman added 13 points and nine rebounds for host Concordia (11-8, 3-5), which led by one at halftime but shot 34% from the field in the second half and was outscored, 47-30.
Corey Blick scored 21 points and Michael Paye had 20 for Westmont (12-6, 4-4).
In the Golden State Athletic Conference:
Concordia 75, Westmont 50--Jaime Gast had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Lindsay King scored 14 points and Pricilla Bendik had 10 points, six assists and six steals for host Concordia (16-4, 6-2).
Point Loma Nazarene 91, Hope International 62--Erin Kellar had 35 points and 12 rebounds for host Point Loma Nazarene (10-10, 6-2).
Denise Silva had 21 points and six assists for Hope International (7-10, 0-8).
Vanguard 72, Christian Heritage 67--Kelly Boeke scored 20 points, including two free throws with five seconds left to help seal the victory for host Vanguard (17-4, 6-2), ranked 13th in the nation. Boeke also had eight rebounds.
Becki Huddle had 16 points and five assists for the Lions, who made only three of 22 from three-point range (14%) but made 21 of 25 free throws (84%).
In nonconference men’s volleyball:
UC Irvine 3, Princeton 0--Sophomore middle blocker Erick Helenihi had 27 kills and six blocks for host Irvine, which won, 17-16, 15-13, 15-5.
Cory Hinkle had 65 assists and Kevin Reid had 17 kills and 13 digs for the Anteaters (4-3).
Steve Cooper had 18 kills and Dennis Alshuler, formerly of Corona del Mar High, had 17 kills and three blocks for Princeton (1-1).
