* Philip Sheng of Thousand Oaks defeated Tin Dong of Long Beach, 6-7 (7-0), 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), in the round of 16 of the boys’ 18 division at the 49th annual Gene Jung MidWinter Tournament on Sunday at Palm Park in Whittier.

The No. 4-seeded Sheng plays ninth-seeded Drew Hoskins of Los Alamitos in the quarterfinals Saturday. Hoskins defeated Alex Yaftali of Westlake Village, 6-2, 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (9-7), in the round of 16.

Also in boys’ 18s, sixth-seeded Nicholas Weiss of Calabasas defeated Amir Marandy of Woodland Hills, 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals. Prakash Amritraj of Encino beat Dustin Tsu of San Marino, 6-2, 6-0.

In boys’ 16s, No. 5-seeded Lester Cook of Calabasas defeated Steven Hsu of Upland, 6-1, 6-4,. Cook plays Patrick Buchanan of Fullerton in the round of 16 Saturday.

No. 9-seeded Kean Feeder of Ojai beat Kevin McQuaid of Huntington Beach, 6-2, 6-2, and will next face No. 1-seeded Doug Stewart of Malibu.

Peter Farkas of Ojai beat Jason Nguyen of Chatsworth, 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, and will next play Derrick Bauer of Ojai.

Justin Montgomery of Channel Islands Harbor defeated Jamil Al-Agba of Ojai, 6-2, 6-2, and Robert Yim of Glendale beat Aubry Wand of Portola Valley, 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (11-9).

In boys’ 14s, Hagop Tadevosian of Glendale advanced to the round of 16 with with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Matthis Tabeling of Santa Monica.

Samuel Tadevosian of Glendale beat Scott Hohenstein of Anaheim, 6-2, 6-0. Gary Sacks of Calabasas outlasted Edward Mendoza of Baldwin Park, 6-7 (7-0), 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, and Skate Gorham of Ojai defeated Bryant Young of San Marino, 6-3, 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (9-7).

In the girls’ 18s, Tiffany Eklov of Ojai defeated Ashley Backus of San Diego, 6-2, 6-0, to advance to the quarterfinals. She will play Natalie Braverman of Newport Beach.

In girls’ 14s, Celia Durkin of Woodland Hills beat Dunya Wren of Highland, 6-3, 6-4, in the round of 16. Christine Dao of Northridge defeated Vanessa Dunlap of Newport Beach, 6-3, 6-1.

MOTORSPORTS

* Ventura Raceway holds its general meeting for the 2000 season at 7 p.m. Friday at the Ventura County Fairgrounds in the McBride Building.
