West Has East Out of Sight in Hurry

Tony Sulser made it look easy and so did his West teammates in the American Legion District 20 All-Star baseball game Monday afternoon at Chatsworth High.

Sulser, who just graduated from Calabasas High, and six other pitchers limited the East to three hits and the West cruised in the nine-inning game, 15-2.

The Arizona-bound right-hander struck out four, including the side in the first inning, and walked one in two hitless innings that set the tone.

“I was impressed with everything I did today,” Sulser said, grinning. “I’ve had an all right summer, and I came out here and just threw.”

His teammates apparently just came out to hit.

Tim Cantu of Panorama City Monroe gave the West a 3-0 lead with a two-out, three-run home run in the first inning.

The West added four runs in the second inning on four hits to take a 7-0 lead.

The key blows were run-scoring singles by Gregg Wallis of Valley Chatsworth and Rafael Arroyo of Panorama City Monroe, and a two-run double by Valley Chatsworth’s Jacob Ball.

“Everybody came out today,” Sulser said.

Sulser effort was just the beginning of a big day for Calabasas players.

Justin Segal, who will be a junior in the fall, retired the side in order in the ninth, getting Erik Livengood of Sunland-Tujunga Verdugo Hills to strike out swinging to end the game.

“I love it,” Segal said. “I just wanted to throw strikes. I treated the game as no different than any other one, but these hitters are better. I’m pretty happy with how I did.”

In between the strong showings by Sulser and Segal was another one by another Calabasas product.

Randy Curtis had run-scoring singles in the sixth and seventh innings.

Curtis batted .444 for the Coyotes last season, his senior year.

“I just wanted to have some fun,” Curtis said. “It was a good day for Calabasas.”

And for the rest of the West, too.
