St. Francis Is Airborne With Bonds

Share

Football Coach Jim Bonds, in his first year at St. Francis High, already has found success with his wide-open passing attack.

In their first summer passing tournament, the Golden Knights upset Hart, 20-14, on Saturday to win the Bonita tournament.

Bonds, who coached previously at Alemany and is a former quarterback at Hart, singled out quarterback John Sciarra and receiver Brett Mitchell for their performances. He said linebackers Matt Sikorski and Nathan Terrazone also made important plays.

St. Francis and Hart are expected to be among the top teams in Southern Section Division III. They are not scheduled to meet during the regular season.

“It would be interesting if we ever play,” Coach Mike Herrington of Hart said.

* Gregg Frazer, offensive coordinator at L.A. Baptist for 11 years, has taken over as head coach. He replaces Bert Esposito, who resigned after being hired in April.

SOCCER

* Ali Pavoni, an All-Southern Section honoree who led the Hart girls’ team in goals and assists last season, has committed to Pepperdine. She has a 4.3 grade-point average and plays for the Valley United Stars club team.

BASKETBALL

* Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley might be the favorites to win the Marmonte League boys’ basketball title next season, but Westlake served notice Saturday it could be a factor after winning the San Fernando Valley Referees’ tournament at Crespi.

Led by senior guard Adam Mazarei, the Warriors defeated Crespi, 62-54, in the championship game. Guard Alan Ellis paced Crespi, averaging nearly 15 points.

BASEBALL

* Kenji Mochizuki has resigned as coach at Van Nuys.

* All-Mission League shortstop Dale Legaspi of Crespi is recovering from a fractured elbow that ended his summer season last month. He’s expected to be fully recovered for next baseball season.
