Lakers Sign Madsen to Three-Year Deal

Mark Madsen was officially welcomed to the NBA champions Wednesday, when the Lakers signed their first-round draft pick, a former Stanford bruiser, to a three-year contract believed to be worth more than $2.2 million.

Madsen, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward, was the 29th pick in last week’s NBA draft. He averaged 12.2 points and 9.3 rebounds a game as a Cardinal senior last season, leading the Pacific 10 Conference in rebounding.

His signing “clears the way for him to participate in our summer program,” General Manager Mitch Kupchak said.

“It’s not unusual for first-round picks to play in the summer program anyway, but I know it’s something he’s happy to have out of the way, and so are we.”

The Lakers--including unsigned second-round pick Cory Hightower, a 6-8 guard from Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa--begin play Saturday in the L.A. Pro Summer League at the Pyramid in Long Beach.
