Schultz Signs With Arizona

Mike Schultz, former Cleveland High and Loyola Marymount pitcher, has signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks and will report to the Adelanto-based High Desert Mavericks of the Class-A California League.

Schultz, a second-round pick, has been working out in Tucson and is expected to report next week.

In his three-year career at Loyola, Schultz had a 25-14 record with a 5.33 earned-run average and 322 strikeouts in 347 1/3 innings. He was 9-6 last season with a 5.69 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 118 2/3 innings.

As a senior at Cleveland, he was 7-3 with a 1.69 ERA, striking out 103 in 83 innings. His final start was a one-hit shutout of Sylmar in the first round of the City Section playoffs.

He was selected in the eighth round of the draft in 1997, but chose to attend Loyola Marymount.

* Pitcher Doug Slaten of Pierce College turned down a scholarship to UCLA and signed with the Diamondbacks. He was drafted in the 17th round.

* The American Legion District 16 will hold its All-Star games Sunday at Camarillo High. The 17-and-under division will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the 18-and-under division at 2:30 p.m.

FOOTBALL

David Gutierrez has been hired as coach at Santa Clara High.

Gutierrez, the Saints’ defensive coordinator last season, takes over a program that has gone 16-54 since 1993.

TENNIS

* Anand Amritraj of Calabasas and Vijay Amritraj of Encino have reached the final of the men’s 45-and-over doubles of the Wimbledon Championships at the All-England Club.

The unseeded Amritrajes, representing their native India, upset top-seeded Brian Gottfried and Tom Gullikson, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, in the semifinals Thursday.

They recorded a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory over fourth-seeded Ross Case and Geoff Masters of Australia in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, and they defeated Ken Rosewall and Fred Stolle of Australia, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round Monday.

* Andrew Banks and Ben Riby of Britain defeated Prakash Amritraj, a senior-to-be at Harvard-Westlake High, and Yeu-Tzuoo Wang of the Philippines, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round Wednesday in the boys’ doubles division at Wimbledon.

* Gene Malin of Woodland Hills defeated Brad Rowe of Simi Valley, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. national men’s 45-and-over hardcourt championships at the Westlake Swim and Tennis Club.

Larry Belinsky defeated Jurgen Janson of Westlake Village, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals. Hank Pfister advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Andrew Stanley of Camarillo, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.

SWIMMING

* Bennett Bier of Pierce College earned junior college All-American honors in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 freestyle.

Bier swam the 50 freestyle in a career-best 21.53 seconds for sixth place in the California Community College Championships in May. He swam a school-record of 47.02 seconds in the 100 free at the Western State Conference championships.

Mike Do of Valley College earned All-American honors in the 100 butterfly (53.07) and 200 butterfly (1:57.41).

Shelly Stiles of Valley earned women’s All-American honors with times of 33.83 in the 50 breaststroke and 1:12.24 in the 100 breaststroke.

TRACK

* Ninth-graders Anthony Hernandez of Simi Valley, Braden Lepisto of Agoura, Durral Richardson of West Hills and Damon Rodriguez of West Hills will compete in the 1,600 relay at the Junior Olympics on July 25-30 in Buffalo, N.Y.

They will be running for the L.A. Hawks.
