Adamczyk, McCarthy Dialed In

Tyler Adamczyk and Ryan McCarthy of Westlake High top a list of 11 high school baseball players from the region selected to play for the Southern California team in the Area Code tournament Aug. 6-12 at Blair Field in Long Beach.

Adamczyk is a pitcher and McCarthy plays third base.

Also selected were first baseman Jaime Martinez of Hueneme, second baseman Gregg Wallis of Chatsworth, outfielders Richie Martin of Valencia and Erik Johnson of Chaminade, pitchers Chris Seddon of Canyon, Jered Weaver of Simi Valley and Jimmy Alstot of Camarillo, and infielders Tim Cantu of Alemany and Ryan Braun of Granada Hills.

Braun is among three juniors selected to the 28-man Southern California team.

Pitcher Greg Acheatel of El Camino Real and outfielder Delmon Young of Camarillo were selected for the 900 team made up of players from around the country. More players might be added to that team.

The teams were chosen by professional scouts after tryouts last week at USC.

Southern California will play a high school team from Taiwan in a two-game series July 22-23 at noon at College of the Canyons.

* Adamczyk, a 6-foot-6 right-hander, is among 37 players invited to the week-long Junior National team trials that start Thursday in Joplin, Mo.

* The Jaeger Sports Academy will hold an arm and conditioning program at Pierce College starting July 24.

Past participants include Mike Lieberthal of the Philadelphia Phillies and Seth Etherton of the Angels.

The program, which consists of long toss, throwing mechanics, arm flexibility and mental training, will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

* Zack Miller, a former junior varsity coach at Agoura, has been hired as the school’s varsity coach.

BASKETBALL

* Howard Fisher, a men’s assistant at Canyons for eight seasons, has been hired as coach. He replaces Lee Smelser, who retired.

* The Santa Clarita Basketball Camp for boys and girls 6-16 will hold its final session July 24-28 at Canyons. Greg Harrick, women’s coach at Canyons, and Smelser are the directors.

* Quarterback Scott Vossmeyer has graduated but that doesn’t mean Crescenta Valley’s passing attack isn’t going strong. The Falcons won the Covina passing tournament on Saturday behind junior quarterback Hudson Gossard.

* Brandon Walker, All-West Valley League linebacker and fullback at Taft, signed with Northern Colorado, an NCAA Division II school.

TENNIS

* Second-seeded Sal Castillo of San Antonio and Wayne Pickard of Portland, Ore., defeated No. 3 Brad Rowe of Simi Valley and Hank Pfister of Bakersfield, 6-3, 7-5, for third place in men’s 45 doubles in the U.S. National Men’s Hardcourt Championships on Sunday at Westlake Tennis and Swim Club.

Pfister defeated Wendell Pierce of Oakland, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, in the singles championship match.

GOLF

* Alex Kuyumajian of Thousand Oaks shot 33-41--74 and is tied for 28th after the first of two qualifying rounds in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship on the Great Blue Course at Heron Lakes in Portland, Ore.

Travis Mayte of Palmdale, Kuymajian’s teammate last season at College of the Canyons, is tied for 67th at 38-39--77.

* Sara Jones of Valencia shot 36-40--76 at the Golf Club at Quail Lodge in Carmel to qualify for match play in the California Junior Girls’ Championship.

VOLLEYBALL

* Outside hitter Cicely Carew of Campbell Hall High has signed with San Francisco State.
