Robbie Reyes did a hook slide around fate.

The reserve second baseman scored the winning run in Notre Dame’s 8-5 extra-inning victory over Ridgecrest Burroughs on Tuesday, but not before surviving several near catastrophes.

Reyes entered the game in the seventh when second baseman Brendan Ryan moved to pitcher with the score tied, 5-5. Reyes led off the eighth, striking out on three pitches.

But he reached base after swinging at a curveball in the dirt for strike three and dashing to first while first baseman J.D. Martin desperately fumbled for an errant throw from catcher Spencer Richards.

Reyes was supposed to steal second when the next batter, Mike Baron, faked a bunt and swung away. Reyes hesitated, was caught between first and second, then dashed for second. Richards’ throw had him beat by four steps.

But the throw bounced off the chest of shortstop John Foisy and Reyes was safe.

Baron flied out and James Rivero hit a single, advancing Reyes to third. Alec Moss struck out and Chris Dickerson walked to load the bases, bringing up Ryan.

But Reyes was on the move again, this time alertly scoring on a wild pitch to give the Knights a 6-5 lead. Ryan walked and Matt Cunningham belted a two-run double.

“I guess I was lucky, but I just kept hustling and it all worked out,” Reyes said.
