Abrams Selected for Elite Tennis Training Program

Stanford senior Geoff Abrams, a standout at Newport Harbor High, has been named to the USA Tennis Collegiate Team, an elite training program for the top American college players.

Abrams, the Pacific-10 co-player of the year after a 45-7 singles record, is one of six men chosen for the program, which is funded by the U.S. Tennis Assn. and is designed to provide exposure to the professional circuit in a team-oriented environment.

Abrams, who will be joined on the team by Stanford teammates Alex Kim and K.J. Hippensteel, begins play June 12 in Berkeley. He will play four additional pro tournaments with the team and he has the option to compete in the International Tennis Assn. National Summer Championships in August.

The men’s team will be coached by Tim Cass of Texas A&M.; The women’s team, led by Stanford sophomore Marissa Irvin, will be coached by Shiela McInerney of Arizona State.

BASKETBALL

Mark Adams, coach of the UC Irvine women’s basketball team, announced the signing of four players, including an Australian.

Maree Vincent, a 5-foot-6 guard from Melbourne, will join the Anteaters next season. Vincent is a transfer from Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon, Wash., where she averaged 15.1 points and 5.4 assists last season.

Lisa Woznick, a 5-11 guard from Lodi, is a transfer from San Joaquin Delta College. She averaged 17.5 points and 5.5 rebounds last season. Kristen Green, a 5-8 guard from Lafayette, Calif., played for Acalanes High last season.

Damesha Carter, a 6-1 forward from Etiwanda High, averaged 16.3 points and 13.8 rebounds last season when she was a first-team All-Mount Baldy League selection.

TRACK AND FIELD

Long Beach State junior Tayyiba Haneef and senior Borya Celentano will represent the 49ers at the 2000 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this week in Durham, N.C.

Haneef, a graduate of Laguna Hills High, recently won the Big West Conference’s outdoor title in the high jump with a leap of 6-1 1/4. Celentano, from Paramount, is a three-time All-American in the pole vault. He finished second at the conference championships.

Both will compete today.

* Jered Stock of Mission Viejo High has signed to compete in track and field for Cal State L.A., a school official announced.

BASEBALL

Orange Coast College outfielder Jason Reuss has signed to play at Nevada Las Vegas.

Reuss, who played at Canyon High, hit .303 with 12 home runs and 43 runs batted in last season. He finished with 27 career home runs, second most in Orange Coast history.
