Misty May, from Long Beach State, and teammate Holly McPeak advanced to the winners’ bracket quarterfinals of the Mexico Open, winning two matches in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tournament Friday at Rosarito Beach. Elaine Youngs, from El Toro High, and teammate Liz Masakayan lost their second-round match and play today in the losers’ bracket. In the men’s draw, sixth-seeded Dain Blanton of Laguna Beach and partner Eric Fonoimoana lost a a second -round match and dropped into the loser’s bracket.
The Ducks agreed to terms with rookie defenseman Antti-Jussi Niemi on a two-year entry-level contract. Niemi, acquired with winger Ted Donato last summer from the Ottawa Senators for goalie Patrick Lalime, played five seasons with Jokerit of the Finnish Elite League. He had eight goals and 16 points in 53 games last season.
