Rejuvenated Texas Doesn’t Last Long Before Ouster

Coach Augie Garrido brought Texas to the College World Series for the first time since 1993, but the Longhorns stay was short.

Florida State eliminated Texas with a 6-2 victory Monday night at Rosenblatt Stadium.

“We never really could get the momentum,” said Garrido, whose team lost to Louisiana State in its opener Saturday and finished 46-21.

Junior right-hander Mike Ziegler (10-4) gave up two runs, five hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter as Florida State (52-18) earned a rematch today with USC. The Seminoles (52-18) lost to the Trojans, 6-4, on Saturday.

Ziegler retired the side in order in seven of nine innings in a game that took only 2 hours 17 minutes to complete.

“He was getting ahead of the hitters and was putting the pitches in his spots,” said Texas second baseman Tommy Nicholson, a junior from Anaheim. “We were unable to hit him.”

Ryan Barthelemy hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning against Texas reliever Charlie Thames that gave the Seminoles a 6-1 lead. Barthelemy, who hit two home runs in last year’s World Series and two against USC on Saturday, tied the World Series record for career homers held by former Seminole J.D Drew.
