1999-2000 All-Sports Award Winners

Share

Newport Harbor High won only one Southern Section title this spring, in boys’ golf, but strong showings at the section swimming, track and field and boys’ volleyball finals helped the Sailors to their first Times Orange County All-Sports award.

After winning section titles in football and girls’ volleyball to take a commanding lead in the large-school division in the fall, Newport Harbor fell behind defending champion Mater Dei and Esperanza at the end of the winter season.

But the Newport Harbor girls’ swim team finished second and the boys third at the section Division I finals. Then, at the section Division II track finals, the Sailor boys finished second and the girls sixth. And though the boys’ volleyball team fell to Corona del Mar in the section Division I finals, Newport Harbor had run away with the large-school division All-Sports award.

In the small school division, Santa Margarita overtook Corona del Mar after the winter sports season and held on for its fourth All-Sports victory.

Santa Margarita, winner of the large school division in 1995-96, 1996-97 and 1997-98, was placed in the small school division beginning last year, when it finished second to Servite/Rosary. This year, Eagle teams won section titles in girls’ volleyball, boys’ soccer, girls’ water polo, boys’ golf and girls’ swimming.

Corona del Mar, one of the smallest schools in the county, finished with the second-most points among all schools but came up short in its attempt to win its first All-Sports title since 1994. Sea King athletic teams won section titles in girls’ cross-country, boys’ water polo, girls’ tennis and boys’ volleyball.

The All-Sports award rewards schools that have the county’s most successful overall athletic programs. The Times’ scoring format awards points only for a team’s playoff participation and finish. Thus, field hockey programs don’t earn points because they do not have section-sanctioned playoffs.

Under the format, 20 points are awarded for winning a section title, 16 for finishing as a runner-up, 12 for reaching the semifinals, eight for reaching the quarterfinals and four for qualifying for the playoffs. In track and field and swimming, 20 points are awarded for a first place finish, 16 for second, 12 for third and fourth, eight for fifth through eighth and four for qualifying, even if it’s one individual for the prelims.

Because the Southern Section decided to award regional championships as well as a section title in boys’ golf this season, Santa Margarita and Servite each received 20 points. The Friars defeated the Eagles in a regional, but the Eagles came back to win the section championship.

The cutoff point to determine large schools and small schools categories was 2,000 students. Enrollment figures are based on those published in the Southern Section’s 1999-2000 Directory of Member Schools.
