Saarloos Aims for Team USA

Cal State Fullerton pitcher Kirk Saarloos said he has accepted an invitation to try out for collegiate Team USA. Saarloos, a junior, will leave today for training camp in Tucson, Ariz. Trials begin tonight.

Saarloos will join Titan sophomore Mike Rouse, who was invited earlier. The 22-man roster will be selected from 35 players. The team, coached by USC’s Mike Gillespie, will play about 30 exhibition games around the nation and finish the summer at a tournament in the Netherlands.

GOLF

Mike Farrell of Coto de Caza and Steve Conway of Irvine each shot five-under-par 67 in the second round of the AJGA Las Vegas Founders’ Legacy Junior tournament at the Legacy Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.

Farrell is tied for fourth at 141, seven strokes behind leader Chez Reavie of Mesa, Ariz. Conway is at 142. Paul Imondi of Tustin is at 147.

SOCCER

Jodi Coffman has been hired as women’s coach at Santa Ana College. Coffman, who played at UC Santa Barbara, had been the women’s coach at San Diego City College for three years.

* Jennifer Shaver, formerly of Newport Harbor High, signed to play at Vanguard. Shaver was a starting defender as a freshman last season at Cypress College.

WATER POLO

Orange Coast College has hired Jason Gall to coach the men’s water polo team, according to athletic director Jane Hilgendorf. Gall, who played at El Dorado High, Fresno State and USC, also will continue to coach the women’s team at Pomona-Pitzer. The teams’ seasons do not conflict.
