Spiker Is Third in National Meet

Josh Spiker of Ventura High finished third in the boys’ mile with a time of 4:07.76 at the National Scholastic Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at North Carolina State.

Spiker, who had a region-record time of 4:06.3 while finishing second in the mile at the Golden West Invitational at American River College in Sacramento last week, finished behind Ryan Hall of Big Bear, who timed 4:06.15, and Ryan Bousquet of Anaheim Esperanza, who finished in 4:06.97.

Anita Siraki of Hoover, scheduled to run in the girls’ mile Saturday, did not compete. The race was won by Alicia Craig of Gillette, Wyo.

Siraki, state champion in the 3,200 meters, won the two-mile race in the National Scholastic meet Friday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

* Andre Chevalier, a former Cleveland High basketball coach who served as an assistant to Bobby Braswell at Cal State Northridge the past two seasons, has resigned.

Chevalier, who played point guard at Cleveland and Northridge, was instrumental in helping develop Northridge point guard Markus Carr.

Chevalier said he intends to work on his master’s degree and spend more time with his family.

DIVING

* Brothers Justin and Troy Dumais of Ventura will participate in the U.S. Olympic trials scheduled for Tuesday through Sunday in Federal Way, Wash.

Justin Dumais, who finished second in 10-meter platform diving at the U.S. senior national championships last year, will be a junior at Texas in the fall after transferring from USC and redshirting this year.

Troy Dumais, who also will be a junior at Texas, won the three-meter and one-meter springboard titles and finished second in platform diving at the NCAA Division I championships in May.

Both won Southern Section championships at Buena High.

* Cobi Jones, Robin Fraser and Greg Vanney of the Galaxy are holding a soccer clinic for ages 8-16 today at Cal Lutheran.

The players will conduct another clinic July 16 at Cal Lutheran.

A girls’ basketball camp for ages 6-14 is being held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and July 17 through July 21 at Cal Lutheran.
