Father Replaces Son as New Mexico State Coach
Former Oklahoma State coach Gary Ward, who led the Cowboys to 10 College World Series appearances in 19 seasons, replaced his son as coach at New Mexico State on Wednesday.
Rocky Ward, the Aggies’ coach the past four seasons, will remain as an assistant coach after the school decided to reorganize the program.
The Aggies went 19-36 last season, including 4-26 in the Big West Conference.
Gary Ward, who played baseball and basketball for the Aggies from 1960-62, was the coach at Oklahoma State from 1978-96, and his teams were national runners-up in 1981, ’87 and ’90. His career winning percentage of .753 ranks sixth among Division I baseball coaches and he ranks 23rd in wins with 953.
