First-Rate Victory for Cal Lutheran

Nicole Sanchez and Monica Flores of Cal Lutheran each scored 19 points for the Regals in a 72-66 victory over UC San Diego in a first-round game of the NCAA Division III West regional women’s basketball playoffs on Wednesday night at San Diego.

Sanchez, who had 12 rebounds, made six of 11 shots. Flores was six for six, including three of three from three-point range.

Cal Lutheran (19-6) made 25 of 51 shots, but was a miserable 16 of 34 from the free-throw line.

Renee Hudec scored 15 points for UC San Diego (20-6).

Christian Heritage 75, The Master’s 64--Lesley DuBois had 18 points and 11 rebounds, but the Mustangs lost the National Christian College Athletic Assn. regional playoff game at The Master’s (16-15).

Kelly Cornell had eight points, seven rebounds and nine assists for The Master’s.

BASEBALL

Canyons 7, Hancock 6--Larry Brown singled home a run in the 11th inning, lifting the Cougars to a Western State Conference interdivisional opening victory at Canyons.

Steve Lombardi’s two-run, two-out home run in the ninth tied it for Canyons (5-4).

The Master’s 7, Cal Poly Pomona 5--Mike Wertz hit his sixth home run of the season and the Mustangs won at Cal Poly Pomona.

Wertz and Mike Ploharz each had three hits for The Master’s (13-3).

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 8, Valley 0--Jackie Aranda hit a two-run double in the second for the Raiders in a WSC interdivisional game at Valley (1-7, 0-1) that was called after five innings because of the eight-run rule.

Naomi Qualls (3-4) pitched a four-hitter and struck out one for Moorpark (6-8, 2-0).

Canyons 3, Cuesta 0--Stephanie Blaire (5-0) pitched a four-hitter while striking out three for the Cougars (9-3, 2-0) in a WSC interdivisional victory at Canyons.

Antelope Valley 14, Mt. San Jacinto 0--Amanda Kauffman and Amber Slaton each had three hits for the Marauders (8-0), who won a Foothill Conference opener called after five innings because of the eight-run rule at Antelope Valley.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pierce d. El Camino, 15-6, 15-2, 15-12--Lance Walker had 25 kills in 42 attempts and five errors for a .590 hitting percentage, and made six digs for the Brahmas in a South Coast Conference match at Pierce.

Beau Daniels had 49 assists, six blocks and seven aces for Pierce (3-0, 3-0).
