Roosevelt Wins First Title Since ’77

For the first time since 1977, Roosevelt High won the City Section boys’ soccer championship with a 2-1 overtime victory against Gardena at East Los Angeles College on Saturday night.

The game-winning score came on an own goal when Panther defender Alfonso Rubio tried to clear the ball out of play, but accidentally kicked it into his goal.

Roosevelt midfielder Hector Orellana scored a goal in injury time to tie the game at 1-1 and force overtime.

Gardena midfielder Cesar Martinez scored the first goal when he beat Rough Rider goalkeeper Jose Mejia to the near post on a shot from five yards in the 70th minute to put Gardena ahead.

In Southern Section games:

Temecula Valley 1, Anaheim Esperanza 0--Nick Bishop scored on a header 11 minutes into the second half as the Golden Bears (24-3-3) held off the Aztecs (21-7-3) for the Division I title at Cal State Fullerton.

Santa Ana Mater Dei 0, Huntington Beach Edison 0--The Monarchs (27-5-2) earned a share of their fourth championship in school history and the Chargers (19-4-3) won their first as the teams finished as Division II co-champions.

Santa Margarita 4, La Verne Bonita 0--The Eagles scored three goals in a 10-minute span of the first half as they rolled to their fourth consecutive Division III title.

Costa Mesa Estancia 5, Torrance Bishop Montgomery 2--Esaul Mendoza scored three goals as the Eagles (20-1-1) routed the Knights despite playing short-handed in the Division IV title game at La Mirada High.

Pasadena Poly 2, St. Margaret’s 1--Freshman midfielder Evan Stone scored in the 69th minute to give the Panthers (22-5) their first championship in the Division V title game against the Tartans (22-4-1).

GIRLS

Capistrano Valley 2, Claremont 0--The top-seeded Cougars (25-1) outshot the Wolfpack 33-1 to win the Southern Section Division I title at Cal State Fullerton.

Lakewood Mayfair 2, La Verne Bonita 1--Kelly Nelson and Jackie Burns scored second-half goals as the unseeded Monsoons (22-3-1) defeated the third-seeded Bearcats (28-4-1) for the Division III title.

Ventura Buena 2, Manhattan Beach Mira Costa 1--Ashleigh Garmon and Natalie Sanderson scored first-half goals for the Bulldogs (32-0), but it took a late save by goalkeeper Currie Hunt to win the Division II championship at La Mirada High.

West Hills Chaminade 2, Torrance Bishop Montgomery 0--Lindsey Weening scored two minutes into the game as the third-seeded Eagles (23-4-4) defeated the Knights (22-6-3) for the Division IV title.

Ontario Christian 2, Pasadena Poly 1--Huguette Flores scored during injury time for the Knights (23-4-2) as they defeated the top-seeded Panthers for their second consecutive Division V title.

In City Section games:

Chatsworth 4, San Pedro 2--The top-seeded Chancellors (17-3-1) won their fifth consecutive City Section championship and 11th in 13 years as they defeated the Pirates (17-2-3) at East Los Angeles College.

Poly 1, Reseda 0--The 16th-seeded Parrots (8-8-4) upset the Regents (9-5-2) as forward Leticia Huerta scored the lone goal in the 70th minute to clinch the Invitational division.
